The cost is pretty good, better than most. It’s kind of dated, but I found it clean, nice, and courteous. The residents are living in the old facility now. It looked well thought out with modern conveniences and those kinds of things. It was under construction, and there were workers around. It’ll be a nice step-up when they finish this facility. I think it’s going to be a step up from the physical environment. Their new facility has a lot of comforts. I saw so many nice facilities that were like Marriott Hotel levels living and that’s not what you’ll get there. I talked to some of the residents and they said that the staff was great. It had that kind of old-fashioned family home feel to it. That might be something that would be not attractive to some people, but I found it was very quiet and the staff nice and behaving nicely toward the residents. It’s not surrounded by a residential neighborhood, but I don’t think that would be a major issue for my spouse or me. They’re almost doubling their capacity, so they do have openings. They plan is to move the residents into that new facility and then renovate their original facility. They are building a new memory care facility serving 16 people. Instead of a half-hour drive, I would have a 5-minute drive, so that makes visitation much easier for me. I found none others in this whole peninsula of North Portland. The main attraction is its proximity to my home. It’s a family operation that’s been in their family for three generations, so it’s not a corporation like the others. They have a residential assisted living program connected with this facility, but I was looking at memory care. They serve something like 18 people in memory care. My first impression was that it’s a small facility. I’ve even talked to some of the residents. I had spoken to the administration and some of the staff there. I’m eating too much." They have a restaurant that’s really nice. My dad is always talking about the food, "Oh the food is really good. She really stepped up and checks up on him because he’s a bit of an introvert, and so he’s in his room all the time. The activity manager has been absolutely wonderful, especially when she knew that my dad was having some adjustment issues. He’s kind of on the edge of needing memory care, so we decided to keep him in memory care because that’s not gonna get any better. He’s well adjusted now, and they know him and they know his meds, so it’s all good. That was another reason why I was kind of like, "Oh my gosh, is he in the right place?" Then I actually heard from other people whose parents are in homes that this is better than a lot of them, so he’s staying there. I would have preferred that the incident hadn’t happened, but I know mistakes sometimes happen. It was well handled as it could have been, I think. They got in touch with the manager who was already home, and she called me. I got a panicked call at 9:00 at night and I called. There was one incident where an evening med tech accidentally put his eardrops in his eyes and caused him a lot of pain. The fact that they don’t take Medicaid is problematic for me. One of my misgivings about moving my dad in there is that, God forbid he runs through his resources, we are going to have to move him again. I think that was hard for him to accept, but the manager and the activity manager are wonderful, and all the staff has been great. The initial move-in was quite difficult for him because he’s actually much more sort of cognitively present than a lot of the people who are currently there. They worked really, really hard to make my dad feel at home there and they still do even though now he is a regular resident. My father is in Courtyard at Mount Tabor.
